Oludeniz Overview

Oludeniz is home to one of the most photographed beaches in the world and the famous Blue Lagoon, however, there is more to the resort than just this. There are innumerous cafes and restaurants, many of which boast spectacular beachfront locations and offer everything from seafood to kebabs and “fast food”. One could eat out twice a day for a fortnight and not cover all that is on offer. There are a plethora of bars that serve a wide assortment of beverages and cocktails. Whilst entertainment is plentiful there are also quieter watering holes to enjoy. There is a diverse range of shops that sell souvenirs, jewellery, Turkish delight, clothes and much more. Shops stay open late into the night and are perfect for browsing in after a good meal or to escape the heat of the day.

Oludeniz has come a long way from being a simple port of call for fresh water as it once was. For many years it remained a place for adventurers and sailors to moor up and enjoy a dip in the crystal clear waters. In the 1970s rough and ready bungalow-tree houses were developed for the avid back packer, the relaxing and calm nature of Oludeniz was a big drawing point for the growing hippy community.

If you fall in love with the area as so many people do every year, you can even choose to get married in the resort, weddings in Oludeniz have been an ever growing trend over recent years, but then it is an exquisite place to get married.

Things to Do in Oludeniz

Spend the day at the Blue Lagoon. The lagoon is probably one of the most recognisable places in Turkey having graced the covers of umpteen holiday brochures over the years. It has National Park status so an entry fee is payable to get access on the spur side. This side of the beach is actually pebbles but those who prefer sand can go to one of the several private beach sites on the other side.

Both areas of the lagoon have places to buy food, drinks and ice cream. Sun beds and umbrellas are available to hire and there are also pedaloes and canoes for rent too. The lagoon is not tidal so its waters are calm and gentle. The water's shallows extend quite far out, which means it is ideal for younger family members to splash around in.

Or choose to relax on the main beach, known as Belcekiz, a beautiful and long stretch of beach, which means that even during high season there is always plenty of space to sunbathe. The beach is sand and shingle mix and the waters are crystal clear. The waves can be quite high depending on the weather but the waters are safe as a cordon prevents boats coming close to where the swimmers are.

When you are relaxing during the day gaze up at the sky and watch as paragliders soar in the sky and slowly float down from Babadag mountain finally landing on the beachfront promenade.

Spend a lazy afternoon watching the world go by seated at one of the many beachfront bars or restaurants.

Catch the local bus to the nearby towns of Fethiye and Hisaronu. Walk around Fethiye's harbour, journey to the old town and wander around all of the charming shops or visit on a Tuesday and go to the large weekly market. If you fancy a change from Oludeniz then take a trip to Hisaronu, a lively and vibrant resort which has a vast array of shops, bars and restaurants.

There is a large choice of activities, excursions and day trips on offer in this area, so there is sure to be something to keep every member of your party entertained whilst on holiday.
